The following is an unedited & candid post by Amit Gupta, Founder of OyeShoppy.com.
Ohk , let me tell you first my intentions about writing this post is very personal in nature and not to market my upcoming e-commerce marketplace –“OyeShoppy.com” but eventually I will end up doing so, since it is also the character artist of this script..lol
Some 3-4 years back I first heard that Ebay and Amazon are top two ecommerce companies of the world who started way back in early 2000’s and I got shocked; oh Wow! At that time, I was in 6th standard.
Then one day, probably some 9-10 months back I decided that I should also start something of my own, but all I had, were pure aspirations, no idea; I started roaming here and there, going to startup events, writing on various cofounders’ sites, tried a lot joining others, and failed!
After that I thought since no one wants me, then now I jump in the well by my own and eureka! one fine day I got my clue and it was ecommerce; but a new question popped up, what to sell in ecommerce? Again dashed! No money in the pocket, no technical expertise, no team and icing on the cake was that I did not know abcd of e-commerce, even though I myself never purchased anything online till then but as I told you earlier I am person of hard aspirations, so decided to decode this road and boom! One day I again figured out what I have to do?
I decided of creating an online marketplace, I was happy, telling others but then again new hardship came; everyone started asking what’s new in your venture? Why should we buy from it? They told me I should drop this idea and either stick to my job or start looking for some other idea since according to them there are big papa’s in the ecommerce market and I found them true, I was a kid when giants like Ebay and Amazon were born and while I was growing, my Indian uncles and aunts like Flipkart, Snapdeal etc already turning into giants, WTF, what I should do against them? How will I compete with them? Is there any way to beat out their shadows?
But I found this strange feeling in my heart, standing on your own feet requires your strength not of others! There is life beyond shadows too and I due to which survived till date and keep on doing so. It was not easy but I figured out what I am going to do with my ecommerce baby, not to answer others – What different we are going to do? But for the real people out there; for our stakeholders and off course, count me too! I just wanted to build ecommerce ecosystem from scratch and making is more interesting and affordable; also now I’ve got 8-9 guys team, a small sharing office next to Flipkart, our first public beta is ready for launch, I learned a lot about what the hack ecommerce is and how to leverage, its shortcomings! But still I am bouncing on the road, with lots of glitches and positive terrifying news around me.
And two of those positive terrifying news came in last two days back to back, first of which Flipkart got $1 billion funding, can you believe the numbers, OMG! One of my Indian Uncle turned Giant too and then news flown from big giant papa’s corner, which says –“Boyz we are shelling $2 billion in Indian ecommerce market”, WTF, is it a race? You big giants never think about babies like us, you also forget that once upon a time you were same babies like us! But what to do, it is a race and one day soon we are also going to do the same!
I shared the same positive terrifying news with my cofounder and all she said it is the good news, positive one, not terrifying at all; she said that there are people who are ready to fuel Indian ecommerce market, since all this market got is hefty potential and future, then I said to her, what if these big giants becomes so powerful, they started crushing the twigs like us and what if every private investor going to fund only big players like them, then what will happen to Indian ecommerce babies like OyeShoppy? Then again her Buddha soul said to me, that there is always life beyond the shadows, we will figure out our own path, we will found our own investors, our own resources but for now we should just concentrate on creating worth for our stakeholders and in spite of these fighting these big giants big monies, let start fighting their features, start leveraging their shortcoming and on the top start experimenting on our own ideas, which we are doing currently. And after her soothing preaching, I saw this dream last night, that we also got some money to execute our ideas and we are also turning into giant babies..lol
So the moral of the story is there is life beyond the giants Shadows too! And all you need is to find your own path and create your own space rather than living by others shadows.
