Cloud: The NVIDIA RTX 4000 Ada Generation GPU for better productivity & economics

With the NVIDIA RTX 4000 Ada Generation GPU, the new cloud-based service provides better productivity and economics for companies in the media and entertainment industry that are challenged with processing video content faster and more efficiently.

  • Using Akamai’s offering, media and entertainment companies can build scalable, resilient architectures and deploy workloads that will be faster, more reliable, and portable, while taking advantage of the world’s most distributed cloud platform and integrated content delivery and security services.
  • Video transcoding and live video streaming: GPUs can perform faster-than-real-time transcoding of live video streams, improving the streaming experience by reducing buffering and even playback, while GPU-based encoding improves efficiency and reduces processing times compared with traditional CPU-based transcoding. The NVIDIA RTX 4000 GPU is equipped with the latest-generation NVIDIA NVENC and NVDEC hardware, which enables additional capacity for simultaneous encoding and decoding tasks. This is critical for applications requiring high-throughput video processing, such as live streaming. The eighth-generation NVENC engines provide support for the latest video codecs, including the highly efficient AV1 codec, which enables higher-quality video at lower bitrates.

  • Data analysis and scientific computing: GPU cloud computing is also commonly used in data analysis and scientific computing because of the nature of its tasks, which often involve processing large amounts of data. These tasks are time-consuming and computationally intensive. GPUs can help accelerate these tasks by processing large amounts of data in parallel, which enables faster and more efficient analysis and simulation.
  • Gaming and graphics rendering: GPUs are widely used in the gaming industry, mainly for graphics rendering and other tasks related to video game development. This is because GPUs are designed to handle complex graphics processing and can provide fast, high-quality rendering of 3D graphics.
  • High-performance computing: GPU-enabled cloud computing is commonly used for high-performance computing applications, such as modeling and simulation, that require fast and efficient processing of large amounts of data. GPUs can also be used to accelerate simulations, calculations, and other computationally intensive tasks, which leads to faster results and better performance.

Agtech: ak?ara, a micro language model (µ-LM) for climate smart agriculture, targeting underserved farmers in the global south

Cropin Technology, a global Agtech company launched ‘ak?ara’, the sector’s first purpose-built open-source (Apache 2.0 License and with no restrictions) Micro Language Model (µ-LM) for climate smart agriculture, built on Mistral’s foundation model. ‘Ak?ara’ is designed to address the problems faced by the underserved farming communities in the Global South by removing barriers to knowledge and empowering anyone in the agriculture ecosystem to build frugal and scalable AI solutions for the sector.

The Why

  • The first version of ak?ara will cover nine crops viz. paddy, wheat, maize, sorghum, barley, cotton, sugarcane, soybean, and millets for 5 countries in the Indian subcontinent. These food crops collectively account for a substantial portion of the world’s food requirements and are the staple food for the population in the global south.
  • Developed by Cropin and hosted on Hugging Face, ak?ara is a frugal and scalable µ-LM built and fine-tuned on top of the Mistral-7B-v0.2 model. Recognizing the environmental impact of running large language models (LLMs), Cropin has meticulously compressed ‘ak?ara’ into 4-bit from 16-bit by using QLoRA or Quantization and Low-Rank Adapters (LoRA).
  • The model seems to be more relevant than GPT-4 Turbo by almost 40% on randomly selected test dataset as measured by the ROUGE or the Recall-Oriented Understudy for Gisting Evaluation scoring algorithm. The model ensures that the responses are factually relevant and brief while minimizing the compute and storage resource requirement.
  • It was fine-tuned with more than 5,000 high-quality question-response pairs specific to agriculture and more than 160k tokens in the context. These numbers are expected to increase as we add more crops, geographic locations and use cases. To ensure that the model remains faithful to the question, it is grounded by using techniques like RAG or Retrieval Augmented Generation by cross referencing an authoritative subject matter experts’ knowledge base.
  • This open-source initiative aims to support agronomists, agri-scientists, field staff, and extension workers and gradually extend the services to farmers in multiple languages, considering the need for local language support. Cropin believes that transforming global food systems requires equipping industry think tanks and researchers with the best decision-making tools and information. This knowledge should then be disseminated at the grassroots level.

EdTech: A tech-enabled offline Vidyapeeth Centre in Preet Vihar, Delhi
