This makes it harder for people to agree on basic facts and increases the need for strong, AI-supported verification systems.

The Rise of Synthetic Content

Synthetic content has become highly convincing. A deepfake video, a cloned voice note or an AI-generated document can circulate widely before anyone questions its authenticity. This creates what some researchers describe as “bespoke realities”, where people see only the content that aligns with their beliefs. When manipulated content enters these personalised spaces, it reinforces misinformation even more strongly.

India’s information ecosystem is large and extremely active. With multiple languages, diverse audiences and widespread use of private messaging platforms, misinformation can spread rapidly. Synthetic content adds another layer of risk. A single manipulated video or audio clip can influence public sentiment, create fear or increase community tensions.

The linguistic diversity of India also makes manual verification harder. AI systems trained to recognise regional languages, dialects and cultural nuances can support fact-checkers by identifying anomalies or mistranslations that humans might miss.

Even with the best AI tools, the human role remains central. Fact-checking requires judgement, context and an understanding of why a particular piece of misinformation resonates with a community. AI can flag potential issues, but humans decide how to respond, how to communicate the correction and how to rebuild trust.

For any information ecosystem to remain healthy, it needs strong self-correcting mechanisms. In the digital age, this means combining AI detection tools with clear editorial processes, transparent communication and responsible content governance.

A strong fact-checking and detection framework requires collaboration between technology companies, media organisations, researchers and policymakers. Some practical steps include:
