A question that has quietly frustrated WordPress developers and the businesses that hire them for years: how do you actually prove and verify that someone is as good as they say they are?

Resumes help. Portfolios help. But when you are trusting a developer to build and maintain a platform that your entire business runs on, “trust me, I know WordPress” has never really been good enough.

Until now, there was no serious, industry-wide answer to that question.

Kryterion, a company that has spent 25 years helping organizations build rigorous certification programs, and Automattic — the team behind WordPress.com, WooCommerce, WordPress VIP, Tumblr, Jetpack, Pocket Casts, Day One, and a remarkable slice of the open web — have partnered to launch the Advanced Professional WordPress Developer certification.

It went live in mid-February 2026 as the most credible, independently-validated credential the WordPress development world has ever seen.

Built by those who understand

The new exam was not designed in a boardroom; Automattic’s WordPress VIP division – which has spent nearly two decades keeping mission critical deployments running for some of the world’s most demanding organizations – led curriculum development.

They know what it looks like when a high-traffic site buckles under the load, a security vulnerability slips through, a poorly designed deployment becomes a nightmare to scale.

Top WordPress agencies from around the world were also brought in to test the credential before launch, stress-testing the exam against what developers actually encounter on the job.

The result is an assessment that covers eight domains: WordPress Core, Custom Development, Security, Performance, Change Management, Debugging, Scalability and Architecture, and Disaster Recovery — the full breadth of what separates a good WordPress developer from a great one.

“This partnership marks a milestone in formalizing skills and expertise in advanced professional WordPress software development,” said Klaus Harris, Credentialing Program Lead at WordPress VIP.

“Some of the top WordPress agencies in the world have helped test the credential. Partnering with Kryterion enables us to offer a rigorously validated credential that reflects true mastery and professional readiness in developing business-critical WordPress applications for the most demanding environments.”

Why Kryterion?

Kryterion has been in the business of making certifications mean something since 2001. Its Webassessor platform delivers secure dual-camera online proctoring and the kind of psychometric rigour that turns an exam into a credential people actually respect.

If a certification is going to carry weight in an industry, the testing infrastructure behind it matters enormously — and this one has it.

“We’re excited to join Automattic to empower developers with respected credentials that reflect their real-world skills,” said Angela Street, Chief Customer Success at Kryterion.

“By combining Kryterion’s full-service certification offerings with Automattic’s deep connection to the web development community, we’re unlocking new opportunities for developers to grow their careers and help businesses thrive online,” she added.

From idea to launch in five months

What is perhaps most impressive about this partnership is how quickly it moved: Kryterion began supporting Automattic’s item development in September 2025; a beta test was completed in January 2026; the full credential launched in February.

Five months from kickoff to a live, psychometrically validated exam available to developers worldwide speaks to how seriously both organizations took getting this right.

For developers who have spent years building world-class work without a formal way to show for it, this credential is long overdue. And, for the businesses and agencies trying to find those developers in a crowded, hard-to-read market, it might just be the clearest signal they have ever had.
