Today is International Women in Engineering Day (INWED). The occasion is celebrated globally every year on June 23 to honor the achievements, innovation, and contributions of women engineers across the world.
This year’s official theme is #EngineeringIntelligence. It spotlights the critical perspectives and leadership that women engineers bring to the industry, especially as artificial intelligence rapidly changes the technology landscape.
“Today, we have several women in this discipline, from traditional to advanced engineering, contributing to shaping the future of the AI industry as they occupy critical technical and leadership roles.” — Jyolsna Elangovan, Vice President of Engineering, Head of Applications, Data Science and Gen AI Portfolio, Securonix
Jyolsna Elangovan, Vice President of Engineering, Head of Applications, Data Science and Gen AI Portfolio, Securonix, says, “The representation of women in the global engineering workforce has been growing steadily over the last couple of decades. Today, we have several women in this discipline, from traditional to advanced engineering, contributing to shaping the future of the AI industry as they occupy critical technical and leadership roles. In the cybersecurity domain, where threats are continuously evolving in scale and sophistication, women are driving responsible innovation and solving complex problems. They are creating solutions to empower businesses and safeguard communities.”
The day was originally established in the United Kingdom by the Women’s Engineering Society (WES) on June 23, 1919. It marks the exact founding date of the society, which was created after World War I to protect and promote women’s roles in the engineering fields. It has since grown into an international event with official UNESCO patronage.
“My vision is to see representation of women in technology leadership to truly reflect how they are portrayed in the general population. This can be accomplished when more organizations launch initiatives that drive Inclusion and Diversity, supporting women in the AI and Data Analytics space.” — Swetha Srivastava, Delivery Head, Analytics and AI, Inspira Enterprise
Swetha Srivastava, Delivery Head, Analytics and AI, Inspira Enterprise, says, “Although the number of women has significantly grown in the engineering workforce, they remain underrepresented in technology leadership. With AI becoming mainstream, the leadership mindset will become AI-first, further data-driven, and agile in the coming days. Organizations should nurture a more inclusive AI environment and create a level playing field for women in the industry. AI demands creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and ethical decision-making, skills that are inherent to women.
“My vision is to see representation of women in technology leadership to truly reflect how they are portrayed in the general population. This can be accomplished when more organizations launch initiatives that drive Inclusion and Diversity, supporting women in the AI and Data Analytics space. Inclusive workforces can inspire the next generation of women engineers to lead a safer digital future for all”.
INWED serves as a critical global platform to build visibility for women in STEM, encourage more girls to pursue engineering careers, and push organizations toward actionable workforce equity.
