GreenTech: Construction of India’s first Ethanol-to-Jet SAF plant at NTPC’s Green Hydrogen Hub, Andhra Pradesh
GPS Renewables (GPSR), a global full-stack renewable oil and gas company, has been awarded the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract by NTPC (National Thermal Power Corporation) Limited to construct India’s first Ethanol-to-Jet (ETJ) Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) plant. The plant will be located at NTPC Green Energy Limited’s (NGEL) Green Hydrogen Hub in Pudimadaka, Andhra Pradesh.
Mainak Chakraborty, Co-founder and CEO, GPS Renewables, said, “Sustainable Aviation Fuel stands out as the most promising option for reducing emissions in a hard-to-abate sector like aviation. However, viable commercial-scale production of SAF is still limited. At GPS Renewables, we have always prioritised technologies that can accelerate India’s transition to clean energy. Our collaboration with Lummus Technology LLC reflects that commitment. Through this partnership, our aim is to bring a proven pathway to produce Sustainable Aviation Fuel from ethanol and enable the large-scale production of SAF in India.”
FEATURES
- As the primary contractor, GPS Renewables will deliver the project with its technology and engineering partners. Lummus Technology will provide the ETJ technology license and basic engineering for the process.
- Xytel India, a specialist in skid-mounted, modular, and fully automated pilot/mini plant solutions, will provide detailed engineering for the core process package.
- GPS Renewables, supported by Lummus, will lead all engineering, including the Hydrogen Generation Package, and Offsites and Utilities, along with procurement, construction, start-up, and commissioning.
- The plant will produce 1,800 tonnes per annum (TPA) SAF using ethanol derived from CO2.
- The plant will use a demonstrated process chain: ethanol-to-ethylene conversion, olefins oligomerisation, and hydroprocessing to produce SAF and renewable diesel.
